Obituary for Walter "Joe" Greenway
Surrounded by his family, Walter Joe Greenway, 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 13, 2018 in San Angelo.
Joe was born January 11, 1930 in Snyder, Texas to Alfred and Maggie Greenway. He moved to Sweetwater in 1943 and graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1947.
Joe married Helen Spencer Greenway on November 22, 1947 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and they were married 70 wonderful years before his death.
Joe and Helen lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Sweetwater, Snyder, Abilene and San Angelo. Joe owned and operated Greenway Motor Service in Snyder for 30 years. In the late 1960’s he became a pilot and a flight instructor, teaching students in Snyder and later in Abilene. In 1979 he became a charter pilot for Abilene Aero and then a corporate pilot for Wright Capital Corporation. He retired in 1989 and traveled throughout the United States. In 1996 he and Helen moved to San Angelo where he enjoyed delivering cars for Jim Bass Ford and Lithia Dodge-Honda.
Joe loved life and lived it fully enjoying water skiing, scuba diving, riding motorcycles, constructing anything he could imagine, reading, eating good food, listening to all kinds of music, traveling extensively, visiting with people, and helping and loving his family. His greatest joy was his bride, Helen, and his daughters and their families.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Maggie Greenway, in-laws A.O. and Gladys Spencer, and an infant brother, James Alfred Greenway.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Spencer Greenway; two daughters, Joyce Sprott (Royce) and Linda Breeden Miller (Ronald) of San Angelo; five grandchildren, Helen Breeden Wright (George) of Fort Worth, Robin Sprott Graves (Jared) of Miles, Ray Breeden (Cathy) of Cypress, Forrest Breeden (Brooklyn) of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Ryan Sprott (Erin) of San Antonio. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Hospice of San Angelo (HOSA), P. O. Box 471, San Angelo, TX 76902 (325-658-6524) or a favorite charity.
The family wishes to thank Dr. James Melott for his many kindnesses, the staff of HOSA, and the staff and friends at Rio Concho Terrace.
Per Joe’s wishes, the family will have a private family service Saturday, January 20 at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, San Angelo.
